Volunteers have been a key component of The Salvation Army since the very beginning. In fact, the name "The Salvation Army" came about in 1878 when William Booth adapted it from a phrase he read in a report that described the organization as a "volunteer army." The year-round support of dedicated volunteers allows us to meet the need at the point of need.
