Stories of Change

Jasmine

Jasmine is a bright, energetic and sociable 10-year-old. She makes good grades in school, has crowds of friends and lives happily with her grandmother and older sister, Jacqueline. No one would ever assume that this bubbly pre-teen had anything but a normal childhood. But only two years ago, Jasmine was incredibly reserved, distrustful and assumed to have a learning disability.

Jasmine’s young life began in a blur of drugs and deceit. Her mother, unable to care for her two children, relinquished custody of Jasmine and Jacqueline to their grandmother, Lynna. Soon after, Lynna also fell victim to the powerful world of drugs. Jasmine’s early years were filled with broken promises and disappointments. Lynna finally realize that something had to change. In one last desperate attempt for help she discovered The Salvation Army.

Lynna, Jasmine and Jacqueline were admitted into Renewal Place, a two-year rehabilitation program for chemically addicted women and their children located at the Purdue Center of Hope. Lynna was able to receive intense counseling to help her understand her addictions. She also participated and completed drug and alcohol rehabilitation classes, parenting and financial training courses, and finished all five phases of the program. She recently graduated from the program.

However, Lynna was not the only member of her family who made a miraculous recovery. Renewal Place brought stability into Jasmine’s life that allowed her to blossom. With time, tutoring and patience, Jasmine grew into a bright student dedicated to good grades. She allowed herself the chance to trust others and to develop her endearing personality.

“Mothers simply want what’s best for their children and The Salvation Army is dedicated to helping in every way,” said Lynna. “I have seen Jasmine grow tremendously through participating with the programs.”

Jacqueline has also thrived in the program. She maintains a 4.2 GPA, is an active member of Girls, Inc., a program dedicated to the growth and empowerment of young women, and is a “Who’s Who” at her junior high school.

“The Salvation Army is one of the most special places in the world,” said Jasmine. “Everyone is always willing to help and being here has been one of the best experiences of my life.”
