Emergency Family Shelter

The Purdue Center of Hope

The Emergency Family Shelter program at The Purdue Center of Hope, provides housing, three meals a day and case management for homeless mothers and their children, ages 12 and under. The shelter has the capacity to house 57 women and children each night.

Families seek emergency shelter for a variety of reasons, including domestic violence, eviction, loss of employment, fire, or other urgent situations. The Emergency Family Shelter is designed to be a temporary solution to homelessness. Stays in the shelter are limited to 90 days; however, those in need of additional time may remain if they are in full compliance with their action plan.

During their stay, clients are provided with intensive case management and given the opportunity to set realistic goals and work toward them. This action plan will ultimately result in permanent and affordable housing. Case Managers meet weekly with clients to determine action plan progress. Children are referred to appropriate agencies for their needs. When families leave the Emergency Family Shelter, Case Managers follow-up every 30 days for three months as part of a post-shelter program.

2007 Statistics/Successes:

  • 308 women and children served
  • 39 families obtained permanent housing
  • 79 families moved into transitional housing

  • 15 women passed the GED
