When disaster struck thousands of miles away in Haiti, the students of St. George's Independent School took relief efforts into their own hands by placing the Salvation Army's red kettles in the hallways of their campus. More than $250 was raised for Haiti.

"It was obvious after the disaster in Haiti that many students wanted to help by donating money, and the Salvation Army buckets seemed like a great way for people to drop change and money on their way to class," said Carolyn Carpenter, a senior at St. George's. "We knew many students who wanted to donate money to Haiti but would forget to donate online. But the red buckets served as a reminder of the disaster to everyone as they walked the hallways."

The students dropped approximately $267 in the kettles over the course of their relief efforts.

"At such a time of great need, it is satisfying to see our students recognize the importance of their role as global citizens and reach out to help their fellow human beings in Haiti," said William Taylor, school president. "Such an effort, although brought about by tragedy, brings the world closer on human terms, which is something that our students value and appreciate. The thoughts and prayers of the St. George's community accompany our donations as well."
