The Salvation Army Launches Donate Your Age Campaign
in Honor of Brigadier
Gertrude Purdue's 100th Birthday
Campaign Aims to Raise $100,000 in 100 days in Honor of 100th
Birthday
MEMPHIS, Tennessee, February 5, 2009 -
There are only 100 days to go
until Brigadier Gertrude Purdue turns 100 on May 18. In those 100 days, The
Salvation Army is trying to raise $100,000 through the newly launched Donate
Your Age campaign which encourages people to make a donation in the amount of
their age to The Salvation Army Purdue Center of Hope, in honor of Brigadier
Purdue’s birthday, and the compassionate life she has led.
The Salvation Army has
launched a micro-site
www.DonateYourAgeOnline.com that highlights Brigadier Purdue’s lifelong
passion for helping those who need it. On the micro-site, people can wish
Brigadier Purdue a happy birthday in the guest book; read about her life, view
photos; listen to a recording about her life, learn more about The Purdue Center
of Hope, which was dedicated in honor of Brigadier Purdue and her late husband
Bramwell; and learn more about The Salvation Army’s Annual Dinner, which will
take place on Brigadier Purdue’s birthday. And, of course, people can donate
their age.
“The idea behind Donate Your Age is very simple,” said Major Mark Woodcock, Area
Commander, The Salvation Army. “We wanted to draw attention to the difference
Brigadier Purdue has made in Memphis. She is very active in the community and
selflessly gives of her time and talents to anyone who needs them. We are
asking people to simply make a donation in the amount of their age to The Purdue
Center of Hope. If people feel coy about their age, they can always donate in
the amount of Gertrude’s age -- $100.”
Brigadier Purdue has touched
thousands of peoples’ lives throughout the community. She served diligently as a
Salvation Army officer for more than 40 years – her last 11 in Memphis and her
accomplishments are many. She has been the recipient of dozens of prominent
volunteer awards. People who know Brigadier Purdue laugh because even though
she is poised on the edge of a second century, this small lady with the big
heart has a busier schedule than most people 50 years younger.
