FedEx and The Salvation Army Relationship Provides Timely Relief After HurricanesMEMPHIS, Tennessee, September 8, 2008 - FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) is known for making "just in time" deliveries. When the company donated a new Disaster Response Unit (DRU) in June to The Salvation Army in New Orleans, company officials wanted to help The Salvation Army prepare for the hurricane season and be able to respond immediately to any natural disasters. They did not anticipate just how soon the DRU would be put to use. The DRU is co-branded with the FedEx and The Salvation Army logos and is equipped with the latest equipment and technology. It has been put into action following Hurricane Gustav, serving three meals a day and snacks. The New Orleans DRU was designed to fit down the narrow streets and thoroughfares of New Orleans. The unit can feed around 1,500 people per day and is fitted with a GPS tracking device that lets commanders know its exact location at any given time. While the immediate need is to help those impacted by Hurricane Gustav, The Salvation Army disaster responders are also watching the route of Hurricane Ike to see if the DRU will be needed should the hurricane hit Louisiana or Texas later this week. "FedEx is known for making critical deliveries where and when it counts," said Rose Flenorl, manager, Social Responsibility, FedEx Services. "With our industry-leading expertise in logistics, we know what it takes to help organizations like The Salvation Army deliver to those in need, across the country and around the globe. We are glad the Disaster Response Unit has helped The Salvation Army provide material, physical and emotional help in the wake of Hurricane Gustav." The DRU was part of a larger donation to The Salvation Army that included 11 DRUs, emergency response materials and a grant to train Salvation Army emergency response personnel in countries around the world. To date, FedEx has delivered nine of the 11 DRUs to New York City, New York; Atlanta, Georgia; Miami, Florida; Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; New Orleans, Louisiana; Puerto Rico; London, England, and Mexico City, Mexico. Australia and Canada will receive their DRUs later this year. The international relationship FedEx has with The Salvation Army grew from a strong relationship the company has with The Salvation Army in Memphis. "We have had a wonderful relationship with FedEx for many years," said Major Mark Woodcock, Memphis Area Commander, The Salvation Army. "They called us a couple of years ago asking how they could help The Salvation Army on a national level. We recommended they look into the Disaster Response Units and put them in touch with our national office. Since then it has grown to an international partnership that is truly making a difference in times of need." About The Salvation Army The Salvation Army values the transforming power of God and the salvation that comes from knowing Christ as our personal savior. The Salvation Army believes that enduring change comes from holistic ministry to the mind, body and spirit.
