Children Capture "Pictures of Hope" Behind a Photo Lens
A Linda Solomon Project Sponsored by General Motors
MEMPHIS, Tennessee, June 15, 2007 - General Motors and The Salvation Army will bring "Pictures of Hope," to life Tuesday, June 19, when Linda Solomon, award-winning photojournalist, television correspondent and best-selling author, leads a photography workshop for children sheltered by The Salvation Army at The Purdue Center of Hope, 696 Jackson Ave.
During Tuesday's workshop, which is sponsored by General Motors, Solomon will teach the children photography techniques. The children will be given disposable cameras following the workshop and will go out on an assignment to capture photos of their hopes and dreams for a better life. Last year, this program was featured prominently in People Magazine and USA Today.
"We can learn a great deal from the images captured by the children, since those reveal their hopes and dreams," said Linda Solomon, celebrity photojournalist. "Despite the fact they are living in difficult circumstances, they appreciate the things that are truly important in life: their families, a good education and peace. All of those hopes are beautifully expressed in their images."
Thanks to General Motors' generous sponsorship of "Pictures of Hope," each child will have his or her best image made into a greeting card. The greetings card will be available for purchase through The Salvation Army Memphis in the fall. The Salvation Army in Memphis will receive 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of the "Pictures of Hope" cards. The money will be used to benefit the many women and children in local Salvation Army shelters and programs. The chosen photos and cards will be revealed at a press conference in the fall.
"Giving back to the communities where we live and work is incredibly important to General Motors, its employees and its dealer body," said Ed Welburn, vice president, GM Global Design. ‘Pictures of Hope' is a wonderful project, and we are proud to be a part of it. Now more than ever, children need hope and a sense of pride that can translate into higher self-esteem and success later in life."
Welburn, along with Solomon, will select the best photo from each child's portfolio for the greeting cards.
This is the second year that General Motors is sponsoring this program. Last year, Solomon led workshops in Salvation Army centers in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Orlando, Florida. In 2006, more than 30 children participated in this program. This year, the program is expanding to 10 cities.
"We are very blessed to have Linda Solomon visit with the children in Salvation Army programs," said Major Mark Woodcock, Area Commander for the Memphis Salvation Army. "Linda's visit provides our children an opportunity to take a positive look at their futures, their goals and ambitions, and most importantly it provides them with hope for the future."
The Salvation Army of Memphis and its local Corps – Winchester and Ben Lear South, serve thousands of children year-round through a variety of programs ranging from housing and food assistance to summer camps, after-school programs and day care. There are two shelter programs at The Purdue Center of Hope which serve children and their mothers. The Emergency Family Shelter is designed to house families on a short-term basis in times of need or crisis. The Renewal Place program provides a safe, nurturing environment for chemically addicted women and their children. The program is unique because it is a rehabilitation program which keeps the family unit together.
For children, The Salvation Army is a safe place, where they can play and act like children, interact with counselors and mentors, and grow spiritually and emotionally away from the dangers of transient living.
The Buick, Pontiac and GMC divisions are also supporting the "Pictures of Hope" program in Memphis, Tennessee. On Saturday, June 23, the young photographers and their families will be special guests at the Ultimate Family Reunion Experience presented by Buick, Pontiac and GMC. The children from The Salvation Army who participated in the "Pictures of Hope" program will each have a photo on display for all Family Reunion attendees to see. In addition, the children and their families will have the opportunity to meet entertainers, celebrity guests and participate in all family reunion activities.
