An Inspiring Evening: The Salvation Annual Dinner

This year's Annual Dinner was a wonderful event. The dinner was held on May 18, 2009, on Brigadier Gertrude Purdue's 100th birthday, to honor her lifetime of tireless service. TV personality, Willard Scott, the most famous of all celebrators of the 100 age milestone, was the keynote speaker.

It was an inspiring evening. Two Salvation Army clients told stories about how the organization saved their lives. Rosemary, a former client of the "Zone" Single Women's Lodge, and Nicki, a current client at Renewal Place, gave motivating and tearful testimonies of The Salvation Army’s powerful and healing love. The "Zone" Single Women’s Lodge is a short-term facility for single, homeless women and Renewal Place is a two-year drug and rehabilitation center. Both programs are housed at the Purdue Center of Hope, which was dedicated in honor of Brigadier Gertrude Purdue and her late husband, Brigadier Bramwell Purdue in 2000.

When keynote speaker Scott came to the podium, his quick wit and humorous anecdotes had all guests laughing. Scott has distinguished himself for his public-service and humanitarian acts, and has been involved with the broadcast industry for more than 50 years. He is also a well-known book author, was the original "Ronald McDonald" character and is the voice of the J.M. Smucker Company.

But for many the highlight of the evening was Purdue. Her legacy of compassion was an inspiration to all in attendance. Her sense of humor and sprightliness made it hard to believe she was 100 years old.

Even though she is a centenarian, Purdue still continues to help those less fortunate. She volunteers twice a month at the VA Medical Center, where she has logged more than 4,000 hours, is the chairwomen of The Salvation Army’s Women Auxiliary League of Mercy Committee and is a member of Quota Club, Optimist Club and Church Women United.

Purdue's achievements are many, but she will tell you that her biggest accomplishment is helping people find a renewed hope and resolve for a better life.

If you wish to further Purdue’s mission or wish her a happy birthday message, please visit www.donateyourage.com, where you can read more about her inspiring life. People are also asked to "donate their age" in honor of Purdue to fund programs at the Purdue Center of Hope. Those who do not want to reveal their own age can donate $100 for Purdue’s age.
