Salvation Army Offers Cold Weather Shelter for Single Women

The city of Memphis is experiencing one of the coldest winters in recent years, with three big snow storms already on record. Unfortunately, that means many are suffering because they have nowhere to go. So, the City of Memphis has designated The Salvation Army as a Cold Weather Shelter for Single Women during the winter season.

The temporary shelter aligns with what is currently the Single Women’s Lodge at the Purdue Center of Hope (696 Jackson Avenue). The Cold Weather shelter opens at 7 p.m. and is available to women without children who have identification. The Salvation Army provides food, warm blankets, and a lot of love to those who visit, and no one will be asked to leave while the weather is still inclement.

At this point, the facility can accommodate around four extra women per night. The shelter will remain open for the winter months, allowing women to come in when the temperature drops below freezing.

“It’s a blessing to be able to serve those in need. We began accepting a larger capacity of women seeking refuge from the freezing temperatures in December of last year,” said Iris Wade, Program Director of the Single Women’s Lodge. “We are the Salvation Army, we are always here, and we’re always going to be here.” For more information about the Single Women’s Lodge, contact Iris Wade or Barbara Tillery at (901) 543-8586.
