Inspirational Story from Widow
of 9/11 Hero

On Wednesday, Sept. 9, The Salvation Army’s “God Bless America” luncheon will feature a woman who can truly speak about a life of courage, leadership and ‘doing the most good.’

Deena L. Burnett Bailey is the widow of citizen-hero Tom E. Burnett, who orchestrated the resistance against the terrorists aboard United Flight 93. The telephone conversations that took place during the last minutes of the flight between Deena and her husband are among some of the most-well known stories of that tragic day.

Since September 11, Deena has become a respected voice for the victims of September 11 and their families. Deena’s courageous and inspirational story makes her the perfect fit to be the keynote speaker at The Salvation Army’s Women’s Auxiliary “God Bless America” luncheon at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn.

As President of the Tom Burnett Foundation and co-author of the book Fighting Back: Living Life Beyond Ourselves, Deena has dedicated her life to sharing and honoring Tom’s strong passion of educating youth about the importance of citizenship, patriotism and leadership.

Drawing from her own experiences, Deena has become an inspirational speaker who emphasizes the importance of being able to live life in the face of tragedy. Deena’s message is that everyday individuals possess the ability to become heroes by reacting positively to situations we face.

Deena’s courage and devotion to upholding her husband’s legacy represents her undeniable strength. Her story is one that can teach and inspire us all.
