Inspirational Story from Widow
of 9/11 Hero

On Wednesday, Sept. 9, The Salvation Army’s “God Bless America” luncheon will feature a woman who can truly speak about a life of courage, leadership and ‘doing the most good.’

Deena L. Burnett Bailey is the widow of citizen-hero Tom E. Burnett, who orchestrated the resistance against the terrorists aboard United Flight 93. The telephone conversations that took place during the last minutes of the flight between Deena and her husband are among some of the most-well known stories of that tragic day.

Since September 11, Deena has become a respected voice for the victims of September 11 and their families. Salvation Army Volunteer Serves God, Country and Others

In addition to being Vice President of SunTrust Bank’s Trust Services, a husband and a father of three, Arthur Oliver is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Tennessee Army National Guard and a member of the Advisory Board of The Salvation Army, Memphis Area Command.

He has dedicated over 23 years of service to his country, including three mobilizations since September 11. As part of Operation Noble Eagle, the National Guard’s homeland security response to the terrorists’ attacks on 9/11, Arthur was mobilized for a year of active duty. He also led his battalion down to Louisiana in response to the damage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Arthur recently returned from a year of active duty in Afghanistan, but his generous services do not stop there… more

The Salvation Army’s Women’s Auxiliary’s “God Bless America” Luncheon is Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn. A silent auction fundraiser will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m., and the lunch will be 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Individual tickets are $35, and tables for 10 are categorized by level of sponsorship: $350, $500 and $1,000. Guests who register before 10:30 a.m. are eligible for door prizes. All reservations should be sent to Arlene Southern, 5230 Cosgrove Cove, Memphis, TN, 38117 no later than August 28. All proceeds benefit the programs and services of The Salvation Army.
