A Summer Paradise

Summer is around the corner. Children everywhere are anxiously waiting for the long, hot days of outside play, pool-side games and the adventures of camp. In fact, many children would happily trade in the school bell for a camp counselor’s whistle. However, for reasons often outside their control, many kids do not have the opportunity to experience the summertime right of passage of a "sleep away" camp. Thanks to The Salvation Army’s Camp Paradise Valley, many of these underprivileged children will get the chance to bunk-up with buddies for the week.

Camp Paradise Valley, located on the beautiful Dale Hollow Lake near Burkesville, Kentucky, is a dream spot where The Salvation Army campers finally get to let loose and participate in activities such as arts and crafts, swimming, hiking, boating, fishing and worship services.

Jasmine, a cheerful 10-year-old, is counting down the days to her upcoming session at Camp Paradise Valley. She has lived at the Renewal Place with her grandmother and older sister for the past two years. The Renewal Place is a rehabilitation program for chemically addicted women and their children. Even though she has enjoyed all of her time with The Salvation Army, she will quickly tell you that camp has been her favorite experience.

"Camp Paradise Valley is one of the most special places in the world," said Jasmine. "I love meeting new friends, going on bike rides, attending Bible classes and, of course, going swimming. I learned how to do a flip and handstand in the pool!"

Camp Paradise Valley is not only a treat for Jasmine but is a blessing for her grandmother, Lynna, as well.

"The summer camp program is wonderful because it provides a safe environment for Jasmine to play and just be a kid," said Lynna. "Mothers simply want what’s best for their children and The Salvation Army is dedicated to helping in every way. I have seen Jasmine grow tremendously through participating with the programs."

Please donate today and help send Jasmine and other children from the Memphis community to camp. Children between the ages of seven to 12 are eligible for Camp Paradise Valley. For more information contact Latasha Spight at 901-543-8586.
