OverviewThe Salvation Army fights hunger, homelessness, addiction, poverty, abuse, and suffering caused by disaster. Often it is easy to ignore the suffering and poverty among us. Did you know that on any given night in Memphis there are 1,800 - 1,900 homeless people in emergency shelters and transitional housing? An additional 200 people may be sleeping on the streets. The Salvation Army's most quoted motto, "Soup, Soap and Salvation", is based on a simple philosophy. If a person is hungry, we feed them. If they are dirty, we offer shelter and a place to clean up. After their physical needs have been met, we offer them hope that is found in Jesus Christ. |
