Beat the Heat 2010– The sweltering heat of this summer has become a serious threat for many Memphians. Therefore, The Salvation Army has joined forces with WREG News Channel 3, Neighborhood Christian Center, Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association, Catholic Charities of West Tennessee, Meritan, Volunteer Mid-South, Community Foundation of Greater Memphis, Memphis Light Gas and Water, and the Shelby County Community Services Agency to raise money to purchase new air conditioner units for seniors and the disabled who have no source of cool air.

The program hopes to raise money for 300 AC units, which retail for about $99 each. Thus, the goal of “Beat the Heat 2010” is to raise $30,000 for 300 units.

The “Beat the Heat 2010” program will fill an unmet need in the Memphis community, as there is already a waiting list for AC units. This program will run through the end of July.

Those interested in contributing to “Beat the Heat 2010” can donate online at www.wreg.com or by dropping off donations at Meritan, 4700 Poplar Avenue, or the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis, 1900 Union Avenue. Checks should be made out to “Beat the Heat 2010.”

“Beat the Heat 2010” also serves as a volunteer opportunity. On Saturday, August 7 – “Beat the Heat 2010” Distribution Day – representatives from each organization and volunteers will spend the day distributing and installing the AC units to the program’s recipients.
